Workshops vary in length from 1 to 3 days and can be customized to suit your needs. Contact Fay@FayHodson.com for enquiries about workshops for your group or individual instruction. Formats vary from in-person, via Zoom, or online via Google Classroom with content adjusted accordingly. Examples of previously taught workshops:
Introduction to 3D Needle-felting
Learn the basics of needle-felting techniques such as hard rolling and soft sculpting as well as making and attaching embellishments.
Intermediate 3D Needle-felting
Take needle-felting to the next level by learning about making armatures, solid core structures to create firm structures efficiently, and using colour to create unique personalities.
Mandrake Workshop: Combining Needle and Wet felting in Solid 3D Structures – Intermediate
Learn how to create unique creatures using internal armatures, solid cores, and dramatic attachments. Finishing with wet felting yields refined organic shapes and a smooth surface. This Y-shape structure is an ideal shape for learning the basics of working with internal armatures. In the second part of the workshop, more complex armature designs are discussed and participants are encouraged to experiment and be creative.
Painting with Wool: Wet-felted Landscape – Beginner/Intermediate
Learn how to use a variety of colored wools and unusual fibres to create felt landscapes. Class content:
- Review of the basic steps of making felt from wool roving or batt
- Laying out a landscape and “painting” with wool using blending and overlaying techniques
- Experimenting with various textural fibres to provide surface detail
- Discussing needle-felting and stitching options and experimenting with them as time allows
- Discussing ways that your finished product can be supported and displayed
Nuno-felt Sampler Scarf – Intermediate
Learn how to make nuno-felt pre-felt samples, join them, and continue felting them to create a unified scarf. Four sample are made using different techniques.
- Using silk as a “backing” to increase strength and create interesting surface designs and textures
- Exploring ways to add small amounts of wool to silk to create a light-weight fabric with interesting texture and drape
- Incorporating “islands” of silk to add interest and enhance drape
- Experimenting with ways to add silk on the surface of felt to create different textures and appearance
Colourful Felt Purses and Vessels – Beginner/Intermediate
Learn how to make colourful, seamless felt projects using resists (barriers between layers of felt). Course content:
- A brief overview of how to make structurally sound felt
- How to use resists to create hollow objects such as purses, bags and hats
- How to create beautifully complex colours by layering different colours of wool
- How to use shibori tying to create surface relief and reveal underlying layers of colour
Understanding How to Work with Pre-felts to Make Pictures – Beginner/Intermediate
Learn the basics of different ways to join pre-felts and discover the impacts such as ghosting and blending of colours that result from fibre migration as the prefects felt together.
In the second part of the workshop participants can choose from three different approaches to making pictures:
- Landscapes
- Folk Art
- Abstract
Felted Hat Workshop – Intermediate
Learn how to make a felt hat using a cloche or beret resist. Participants may add different colours of wool or other fibre to create beautiful surface designs
